China is regaining his status again. Formerly technically and economically dependent on the West, an economically strengthened China acts now with great self-confidence in the political arena. Offering itself internationally as an alternative to the Western liberal worldview, the CP is promoting at home a return to its own intellectual tradition. In doing so, it consciously reaches back to China’s traditional self-image as the first cultural nation.
This new self-confidence can no longer be met with an appeal to the universal human rights proclaimed in the European Enlightenment. Dialogue with China in this new era must be conducted at eye level. This includes knowledge of China’s civilizational foundations. Without it, the fronts that have formed in the dialogue between China and Europe can no longer be resolved.
